Semester in China
THE UNIVERSITY
Beijing University of Technology (BJUT) was founded in 1960, and is a multi-disciplinary university of science, engineering and management. The university is comprised of more than a dozen departments--including Industrial Automation, Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, Civil Engineering, International Business & Trade, Business Administration, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science and Architecture--plus 39 specialties. BJUT has nearly 600 professors and 8000 students. BJUT is authorized by the State Education Commission of China to enroll foreign students and has maintained an exchange relationship with UMF since 1989.
UMF students may choose to attend for one semester or for the academic year. UMF and BJUT participate in a faculty exchange program that allows faculty from BJUT to teach UMF's Chinese language and culture courses, and faculty from UMF to teach English courses at BJUT. Thus a UMF faculty member may accompany the student going to China.
COURSE OF STUDY
Students receive individual instruction in Chinese language and culture. Emphasis will be placed on the development of reading, writing, listening and speaking skills, and students will also be introduced to Chinese Culture and the elementary principles of China's economic affairs. Students can earn up to 16 academic credits for successful completion of all courses.
TRANSCRIPTS AND CREDITS
Students' grades are posted directly to the UMF transcript, factored into the UMF GPA, and are accessible through WebDSIS. Each class will be graded separately.
QUALIFICATIONS TO APPLY
A student must be at least a Sophomore with a minimum Grade Point Average of 2.5. A GPA of 3.0 or higher is preferred. One year of college Chinese or equivalent is required. Two years or more is preferable.
LIVING ARRANGEMENTS
Students live in a dormitory which is one block from the main gate to the campus. Dorm rooms are double occupancy and students are provided with cafeteria privileges. The dormitory has kitchen facilities so that students may cook on their own if they so choose.
COSTS
Students are charged for 16 credits of UMF tuition plus fees at in-state, non-resident, or New England Regional rates, depending on their current tuition status at UMF. Out of pocket costs include round trip air transportation to Beijing and the cost of a student visa. Based on our exchange agreement, room and board are free for up to two students per academic year, BJUT awards for these exchange waivers are very competitive. Students who are not awarded exchange slots may still have the opportunity to study abroad at BJUT, however, they will pay room costs directly to BJUT. BJUT costs are inexpensive compared to UMF. Room charges typically range from $US 500 to $700 per semester. Inexpensive cafeteria meals are available on pay as you go basis.
FINANCIAL AID
With the exception of Federal Work-Study, most regular financial aid may be applied to the cost of the Semester in China program; however, international student waivers do not apply. All UMF students planning to use financial aid for study abroad should meet, early, with a financial aid officer in the Financial Aid Office.
TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS
Students handle their own travel arrangements to and from Beijing. A BJUT faculty or staff member will meet students in Beijing upon arrival and accompany them to the university. Although some excursions may be available through the program, students are also responsible for any personal travel while in China. In past years, students and faculty have visited Shanghai, Xi'an, The Great Wall, The Forbidden City, and The Summer Palace.

HEALTH CARE

All students studying abroad through UMF are required to purchase the International Student Identification Card, which carries some limited health insurance coverage for sickness and illness, as well as medical evacuation and repatriation insurance.
