IMPORTANT: please read all of the following information carefully. There is nothing in here that you can afford to ignore.
You should aim to complete the first three steps a full year before your program begins. Missed deadlines and lack of planning are the primary factors that keeps otherwise eligible students from taking part in study abroad programs.
1). Research. If you are currently looking for a study abroad program outside of UMFs offerings, please be sure to visit the Office of
Enrollment Services and Exchange Programs. UMF is a member of
CCIS, an organization that offers a wide range of academic year and summer study abroad programs. You are strongly encouraged to investigate these programs before researching outside these parameters. Participation in a CCIS program ensures that your registration, financial transactions, and re-entry to UMF will proceed smoothly. While students are in no way discouraged from taking advantage of other opportunities, participants should realize that 99% of all aspects of planning such a program will be the participants responsibility.
UMF is also affiliated with AustraLearn, a study abroad organization offering
study abroad opportunities in Australia and New Zealand.
2). Check that the credit will transfer. Your academic advisor, in consultation with the registrars office, evaluates international transfer credit so, before you
decide to apply for a non-UMF program, check with them that UMF recognizes the institution to which you will plan to apply.
If you learn that UMF wont recognize credit, you should begin researching again to find an appropriate program; however, this is rarely necessary. If your program is through a U.S. university, or through a study abroad agency, you will need to let us know which institution will prepare your transcript at the end of your study abroad program i.e., is it the institution who is ORGANIZING the program, or the institution at which you will actually be studying).
3). Applying for non-UMF study abroad program is a two step process. You must
submit the UMF Study Abroad Application in addition to the sponsoring
organization/university application to the Office of Enrollment Services and
Exchange Programs. Do not submit online applications for non-UMF programs - be
sure to download the application and submit it to our office. Once you have confirmed that UMF will recognize credit from your host institution,
you can begin the application process.
4). Once you have received a formal letter of acceptance to your program, notify the Office of
Enrollment Services and Exchange Programs. The study abroad director will enroll you in a special course, INS 001, at UMF which allows us to bill you for your program and for UMF financial aid to be applied toward your program.
